What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Emotionally Focused therapy, developed by the late Sue Johnson, is an evidence-based, humanistic therapy model based largely on attachment theory, which aims to help clients develop securely attached relationships with others and with the self. While it was originally developed as a model of couple therapy, it has also been adapted to working with individuals (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy or EFIT) and families (Emotionally Focused Family Therapy or EFFT). It is an experiential, emotion-focused model that encourages clients to access and identify the primary emotions and unmet needs underlying their recurring patterns in relationships.
How do I become a certified EFT therapist?
If you are interested in learning the EFT model and becoming an ICEEFT-certified EFT therapist, you will need to complete two levels of training (first, the EFT Externship and then the Core Skills training)as well as a minimum of 8 supervision hours with an EFT supervisor in order to apply for certification. Once you have achieved certification as an EFT therapist (in individual, couple or family modalities), you can complete further training to become a certified EFT Supervisor as well.
